LG Electronics set to collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies Inc for the development of 5G automotive platform. As said by a senior executive, the South Korean tech giant is trying for expanding its business horizon in the automotive business for future growth.

Qualcomm, with the number one semiconductor supplier in telematics and wireless car connectivity tag, announced that it aims in deploying “reliable, connected, intelligent, and location-aware next-gen vehicles.” Its partners include LG, Continental AG and ZTE Corp.

The Vice President of LG Electronics – Park Jong-sun said, “As mobile innovation leaders, LG and Qualcomm Technologies are bringing decades of research and development experience to the automotive industry, specifically in the area of 5G automotive platforms.”

Park added, “Building on our long engagement with Qualcomm Technologies in the connected car segment, we believe 5G is vital to the deployment of a fully connected car platform.”

A market researcher report by Strategy Analytics showed that almost 75 percent of all vehicles sold in 2027 will have embedded cellular connectivity, which an increase from 20 percent in 2015 (reported by Yonhap new agency).

LG has been friendly with Qualcomm and in 2004, it had joined hands with Qualcomm for development of telematics technology. In 2017, the two sides signed a partnership for collaborating on connected car solutions.

In 2019, the two companies agreed to strengthen the ecosystem of LG’s in-vehicle infotainment system, webOS Auto.

LG has been trying to beef up its business presence in the automotive solutions market in recent years.

In the previous month, LG signed a partnership with the Canadian auto parts maker Magna International Inc. for setting up a joint venture, primarily named LG Magna e-Powertrain, for manufacturing electric car motors and parts.
